Christmas Eve with the Mansfields

Cheers!
Cheers!

The Mansfields came to our house this year  for our annual Christmas Eve celebration. Willie made dinner of Enchiladas, beans, salad, chips, salsa, and smoothies. It was quite a hit with the kids – and the adults, too.

Once dinner was over, we were hoping the kids would put on a 1st Christmas show for us, but we never could talk them into it. Instead, the adults chatted and the kids went and played as they sort of contemplated the show. They got as far as finding a baby Jesus and  manger, but got slightly side-tracked when they turned Katie into a reindeer… Maybe next year.

Once we’d sung for Jesus and had our dessert, we all settled in to watch Miracle on 34th Street as snow continued to fall. John had to leave early to run media at the Christmas Eve service. When it was time for Sherice and the kids to leave… Sherice, who isn’t a fan of our driveway on a clear day, really experienced the best of it!

Willie went out to check on Sherice and found her spinning her wheels. He grabbed a shovel and started digging.

A Christmas Party for Jordan

Jordan got invited to his friend Faith’s house for a Christmas Party today. He has been looking forward to it for weeks and as soon as he was up he got dressed so he was ready to go to the party. After a bit of struggle to get out of the driveway and cul-de-sac, Jordan and I were off to the Fitch’s house for the afternoon. Jordan went as Faith’s guest and I went as a helper and guest of Faith’s mom, Ede.

Once we finally arrived, it was lunchtime and Jordan headed for the air hockey table while everyone else ate pizza. After that, we started cracking open the Gingerbread Houses and whipping up the icing. All was going well, with all the houses assembled at least, when the boys challenged the girls to a snowball fight and attention shifted outside to all the snow.

Jordan chose to enter into the activity in an unusual way. Once the girls were beat headed inside, Jordan went to the picture window where the bigger boys were still fighting it out with Ede in the backyard.

This was a perfect way for Jordan to participate in the snow activities. He got all the joy and none of the cold. He could even be hit with snowballs without any complaint. Loved it!

In between the window snowballs, Ede took on the boys and she was amazing! Her  tolerance was so much higher than mine would have been (I was more than happy to stand inside and take photos out the window as well – Jordan and I are well matched!).

Once Faith had had enough outside, she joined Jordan inside knocking on the window.

Hit me, hit me!

And Cameron delivers! I love the look on the kids' faces as they await the arrival of this in-flight snowball.

It got really bad for Ede before she finally called it a day – and she still had a houseful of kids! If she’s feeling it later, I know why!

Ede dished it out so well that soon the boys showed no mercy either. It went back and forth like this for quite some time. Jordan enjoyed the whole thing from the window.

What a fun time! I’m so thankful Jordan got invited to this party and that we could make it inspite of the abundant snow.

Weather update

Wow! We’ve gotten hammered, and winter has just begun. We’ve had snow on the ground for 10 days now, and more is forcast for Christmas Eve. It definitely looks like a mountain retreat around here, with areas that were cleared a few days ago now sporting 10 inches of snow on them!

Annual Christmas Party

We may have had to be picked up by our good friends, the Sessions, in their big truck, but we made it to the annual adults only Christmas party at the Mansfield’s last night. Good food is always a part of the night, as is lots of laughter. This night delivered. Not only did we have fun together, but as the snow continued to fall it felt like we were at a mountain chalet with all our friends and a roaring fire. Absolutely glorious.

After dinner is finished, cleaned up a little and the mixed table arrangement has settled into a girls end and a guys end for some conversation, it’s time for the gift exchange.

Weather around us

As we were heading out for our Santa pictures this afternoon, I couldn’t quite put a finger on what I was reminded of – until it struck me: The scene around me reminded me of a trip to the mountains. Roads covered with ice. Filthy cars all around. Icicles hanging from all parts of vehicles. It was amazing.
